Buster Posey: Model of Consistency

Apr 2nd 2018

“The benefit of a routine is familiarity. When you step on the field, you know the work you put in is taken care of, and now it’s time to go have fun.” - Buster Posey

Commitment isn’t about convenience. It isn’t a little bit thing or a sometimes thing; it’s an all-in, every time thing. It requires a pledge to the process and a daily dedication to your routine. That consistency in preparation translates to consistency on the field.

With a lifetime batting average over .300 and multiple championships, Buster Posey's commitment to a routine over his nine-year Big League career has made him one of the game's most consistent hitters.

The results don't lie. Posey has been consistently successful going back to high school days in Leesburg, Ga., where he was the Gatorade Player of the Year in 2005. That year he batted .462 with a school record 14 homers. He also had a 12-0 record and a 1.06 ERA as a pitcher.

Success continued at Florida State, where in 2008 Posey earned nearly every national award in college baseball, including the Johnny Bench Award, given to nation's best catcher, and the Golden Spikes Award given to college baseball's most outstanding player. Posey hit .463 with 26 homers and 93 RBI that season.

Posey was drafted in the 2008 draft with the fifth overall pick by San Francisco. Less than two years later, he made his debut and won the 2010 Rookie of the Year award while leading San Francisco to a World Title.

In 2012, Posey led San Francisco to another title and picked up NL MVP honors that year, batting .336 with 24 home runs and 103 RBI. Two years later, Posey batted over .300 again and led San Francisco to a title, again.

In eight full Big League seasons, Posey hasn't hit less than .288, going over .300 six of those eight seasons. His OBP has never been below .357 since his rookie year.

Pretty consistent.

Posey attributes his consistency throughout his baseball career to his routine, being flexible, yet disciplined, and never taking a day off, either physically or mentally. Like we said, it's all about commitment.
