Guest Post: C2 = Lightweight Strength

The C2: Marucci’s latest glove innovation, a combination of materials for a stronger, lighter, more responsive defensive tool, that is up to 6 ounces lighter than comparable gloves.
For context, 6 ounces is basically the weight of a baseball.
This glove is the brainchild of Scott Carpenter’s 15 years of modifying gloves and experimenting with synthetic materials and my knowledge of functional elements that give athletes a competitive edge.
Our goal was to create a differentiating glove that combined lightweight functionality and improved ergonomics. If the right synthetic materials are chosen, they’re a game-changer for the traditionally all-leather glove market, but misused they create a glove that’s clunky and unrefined.
Contoured C2 Pattern
We started with the shape. We prefer the leverage and grip strength gained from a two-in-the-pinky hand position but not everyone shifts. So we created a traditional 5-finger glove with a tilted hand stall angle that increases leverage and grip strength. This shape is unlike anything else in our line or in the market.
We optimized small details to compliment this shape. We found that a traditional wrist closure can cause irritation during initial glove break-in so we upgraded the wrist-closure construction to eliminate welting/binding friction on the knuckles. This creates a more comfortable and form-fitting hand stall.
Different Materials, Specifically Chosen
We then experimented with materials. We knew we wanted synthetic materials to keep the glove light, but we didn’t want to sacrifice durability. We broke down the glove into 6 distinct areas and selected the best material each based on its function.
We knew the web material needed to be strong to withstand impact. And since the shell fingers are necessary for shape retention, this material needed to have higher material memory. I’m big on texture so it was important to me that the lining was supple but also thin enough to not diminish feel. The addition of the Horween shell palm is an added bonus, because … I mean, duh, legendary.
Create. Innovate. Repeat.
Throughout our prototypes we tested numerous materials in specific glove locations to ensure ideal function and performance.
Traditional gloves extend straight up/out from the thumb and pinky, but Scott flared the thumb and pinky with molded forms to create a wider catching surface and funnel the ball into the pocket. These contoured forms efficiently transfer energy from your hand to the glove tips for increased ball security.
In the end, we created the C2 - the glove the game didn’t know it needed, because, well, the only tech or feature that actually creates a quicker response time is a lighter glove.
